Champions League final betting tips: City odds-on to realise Euro dream

Published:

Saturday’s Champions League final in Portugal is the second all-English affair in three years as Manchester City take on Chelsea looking to win the trophy for the first time.

City are 20/23 favourites to be crowned European champions having won the Premier League title in three of the last four years.

However, Thomas Tuchel’s side have a good record against City this season, so let’s take a look at the markets for our Champions League final betting tips.

Match Odds

City are aiming to add the Champions League to their Premier League and Carabao Cup triumphs this season, with only the FA Cup out of their grasp.

Chelsea were just 14 minutes away from having to win Saturday’s final in Porto to qualify for next season’s competition but London rivals Tottenham did them a massive favour by beating Leicester.

The 2012 Champions League winners have won two of the three encounters with City this season, although their only defeat came at the start of 2021 when Frank Lampard was in charge.

The west Londoners beat City 1-0 in the semi-finals of the FA Cup which they followed with a 2-1 win at the Etihad Stadium courtesy of Marcos Alonso’s last-minute winner.

Chelsea are 17/5 to win for a third time in 90 minutes, 17/10 to lift the trophy and 19/4 to prevail by a one-goal margin.

City have the best first-half record of all Premier League teams (W22 D12 L4) and they were leading at the break in two of their three meetings with the Blues this season, so can be backed at 8/5 to be ahead once again as one of Saturday’s Champions League final betting tips.

In the #GetAPrice markets, City are 5/1 to win or draw, both teams to score in the second half and over 2.5 goals in the match. At least three goals, as it was in two of this season’s games, is available at 5/4.

Talking Tactics

Sergio Aguero scored twice as a second-half substitute in Sunday’s 5-0 win against Everton but it is questionable whether he will be on from the start in Porto.

Kevin De Bruyne returned to the starting line-up after a three-game absence, so Pep Guardiola is welcoming back key players at a crucial time.

Riyad Mahrez did not start either of the defeats by Chelsea and he came off for Aguero’s fairytale farewell 25 minutes from time so he could get the nod along with Gabriel Jesus, who scored against the Toffees and was also replaced in the second half.

Tuchel has concerns for first-choice keeper Edouard Mendy, who picked up a rib injury trying to save Aston Villa’s opener on Sunday and was replaced by Kepa Arrizabalaga at the break.

Goalscorer Odds

Aguero is the 4/1 favourite to break the deadlock at the Estadio do Dragao and 9/5 just to get on the scoresheet but only Juan Cuadrado has scored more goals than De Bruyne’s four in the Champions League this season.

The Belgium midfielder is 6/1 to score the game’s first goal, as he did on Sunday, and 5/2 to get on the scoresheet while in-form midfielder Phil Foden is 11/2 to draw first blood and 12/5 to find the net.

Kai Havertz is Chelsea’s top scorer in the competition with three goals and is available at 9/1 to score first or 7/2 in the anytime market.

Hakim Ziyech scored in both victories against City this season and is valued at 11/1 and 9/2 either to get the ball rolling or simply to score.
