League Cup could be a special one for Mourinho
Published:Jose Mourinho has never been a manager to do things by halves and though the Premier League remains Chelsea’s primary concern, the Blues should still be backed to lift the League Cup given the 50-year-old’s fine record in domestic knockout football.
The Stamford Bridge club are currently priced at 3/1 to lift the Capital One Cup at Wembley next March with the Special One looking to extend his trophy-winning run as a manager to 10 seasons.
Cup success has always been a cornerstone of management under Mourinho, with the Blues boss claiming domestic trophies of this kind with Porto, Inter, Real Madrid and of course Chelsea.
His first stint with the west Londoners saw the club lift two FA Cups along with a pair of League Cups as the Special One utilised his expensively-assembled squad to good effect.
The depth of quality available to the former Los Blancos boss was clear to see in the last round away at Arsenal, with reserve stars Cesar Azpilicueta and Juan Mata finding the net for the visitors.
Throw the likes of Michael Essien, Kevin De Bruyne and Demba Ba into the mix and there is every reason to think a second-string Blues side can compete with some of the Premier League’s very finest on their day.
Ba, for instance, played a key role alongside Mata in the FA Cup last term, scoring and providing some additional menace as the team fought their way back into contention against Manchester United.
Meanwhile, the ongoing marginalisation of the Spaniard could see some of his very best performances reserved for the competition.
Chelsea also reached the semi-finals under the Portuguese’s big rival Rafa Benitez last term and given the rivalry between the pair, Mourinho will be determined to go one better this term.
