Hungary v France betting tips: World champions on cusp of last 16

| 08.06.2021

World champions France justified their favourites tag with an impressive 1-0 win against Germany which saw their odds cut from 9/2 to 7/2 to win Euro 2020.

Next in line are Hungary who went close to earning a draw in their opener against holders Portugal only to concede three times in the final six minutes.

The Magyars should be roared on by another capacity crowd in Budapest so let’s check out the options in the markets in our Hungary v France betting tips.

Match Odds

The teams are meeting for the first time in 16 years and the French are 3/10 to get the better of Hungary or 10/11 to win and under 3.5 goals.

Didier Deschamps’ men have also won their last five matches without conceding and a win to nil is available at 10/11. They were leading at the break in four of those games, so we go 19/20 on Les Bleus being ahead at half-time and full-time.

Adam Szalai Hungary

At twice the odds, France are 19/10 to win both halves, as they did in two of those five victories, while they are also 29/20 to be ahead after 30 minutes which was the case in four of their previous six games.

Hungary thought they had snatched the lead against Portugal 10 minutes from time when substitute Szabolcs Schon beat Rui Patricio at his near post only for a late offside flag to be confirmed by VAR.

Marco Rossi’s side to score the first goal is priced at 10/3 and Draw HT/France FT can be backed at 13/5 which was the case in Budapest on Tuesday.

Talking Tactics

France have one of the most frightening attacks in world football with Kylian Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann and Karim Benzema leading the line in a 4-3-3 formation.

Their midfield isn’t bad either with the tireless N’Golo Kante supported by Paul Pogba and Adrien Rabiot, so Hungary’s defence is in for a tough afternoon at the Puskas Arena.

Rossi packed the midfield in a 3-5-2 and admitted his team “came apart at the seams and that was my fault as I made some changes which clearly didn’t work”.

The Italian vowed to “play more bravely” in the next two games, adding “we need to attack more in order to really create chances” which could play into France’s hands.

Goalscorer Odds

It took an own goal to secure victory for France against Germany but Mbappe and Benzema both had efforts ruled out for marginal offsides and they are 14/5 and 16/5 to break the deadlock while they are 5/4 and 7/5 to get on the scoresheet.

Griezmann is the outsider of the three strikers to draw first blood at 7/2 or 6/4 to find the net, the same prices for Olivier Giroud who is likely to be on the bench once again.

Defenders Raphael Varane and Benjamin Pavard are 9/1 and 11/1 respectively to score.

For Hungary, striker Adam Szalai is the 11/1 favourite to score the game’s opener while Schon is the same price to get on the scoresheet.
