Premier League: Newcastle v Manchester United betting tips and odds

The Premier League returns with a bang this weekend as champions Manchester City look to give their title hopes a boost at home to Liverpool on Saturday lunchtime and a day later Newcastle take on third-placed Manchester United in a repeat of the Carabao Cup final.

The Magpies start the game as 11/8 favourites to win the game which would move them above their rivals on goal difference.

Magpies back on track

Eddie Howe’s side ended a five-game winless run with 2-1 victories over Wolves and Nottingham Forest before the international break which have put them on the fringe of the top four.

United are 1/6 in the Premier League top-four odds, but that price will almost certainly drift should they meet with defeat on Tyneside.

The Red Devils are unbeaten against Newcastle in the last seven meetings in all competitions, including that 2-0 win at Wembley towards the end of February when goals from Casemiro and Marcus Rashford ended a six-year trophy drought.

However, Brazilian midfielder Casemiro is serving a four-match suspension and Rashford is doubtful after missing both of England’s Euro 2024 qualifying wins against Italy and Ukraine with a knock he picked up during the FA Cup win against Fulham.

Rashford has since returned to training but has not been doing any ball work, concentrating solely on fitness, so it seems unlikely he will be available for the trip to the north east.

In the absence of Casemiro, manager Erik ten Hag is likely to turn to Scott McTominay, who scored four goals for Scotland in their European Championship qualifying wins against Cyprus and Spain, although he faces competition from fellow midfielders Marcel Sabitzer and Fred.

United, 19/10 to win this weekend, shared a goalless draw with Newcastle at Old Trafford in October, so they have kept clean sheets in both of this season’s encounters.

A draw would not be the worst result in the world for the visitors but for the first of our Newcastle v Manchester United betting tips we’ll go with at least one team not to score at 11/10 which would have paid out in both games between the teams this season.

Only Brentford have drawn more games than Newcastle this season and a share of the spoils certainly has its merits, especially with United missing arguably their best two players.

That was the case at Old Trafford, so a draw at 23/10 make the cut as our next selection.

All but one of the Magpies’ 11 draws this season have ended either goalless or 1-1, so a point apiece and under 2.5 goals catches the eye at 13/4. It’s true that we have already picked at least one team not to score, so it’s impossible for that option and a 1-1 draw to be correct, but the 0-0 element is not out of the equation and that can be backed at 10/1.

Finally, Bruno Fernandes has a reasonably good record against Newcastle and he looks an option at 7/2 in the anytime goalscorer market as the last of our Newcastle v Manchester United betting tips.

The Portugal midfielder scored in three successive matches against the Magpies and although he drew a blank in the subsequent three, he has 10 goals this season, three of which came last month.

Fernandes signed off for the international break with a double in the FA Cup quarter-final victory over Fulham, 10 days after he struck the third goal in a 4-1 win against Real Betis in the Europa League.
