Southampton v Liverpool betting tips and odds

Liverpool head to Southampton as 1/3 favourites and still in with a chance of winning the Premier League after Manchester City could only draw at West Ham on Sunday.

The Reds won the FA Cup in another penalty shoot-out with Chelsea on Saturday to win the second leg of the quadruple for which they are priced at 7/1.

Defeat on Tuesday will end their hopes, but a win at St Mary’s keeps them in the hunt as we look at the latest odds and markets to help with our Southampton v Liverpool betting tips.

Southampton v Liverpool form

Kostas Tsimikas scored the winning penalty as Liverpool beat Chelsea on penalties to win the FA Cup on Saturday, 76 days after a similar outcome in the final of the Carabao Cup.

It’s been an exhausting end to the season for the Merseysiders who trail Manchester City by four points heading into the final week when the Reds will host Wolves on the last day.

City’s superior goal difference means a draw would effectively hand the title to Pep Guardiola’s side, who fought back from two goals down to level with West Ham on Sunday and then had the chance to be crowned champions six minutes from time only for Hammers keeper Lukasz Fabianski to save Riyad Mahrez’s penalty.

Liverpool will be hoping to take advantage of that let-off but they will have to dust themselves down after playing an extra 30 minutes against Chelsea without Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk who picked up injuries.

Salah limped off after 33 minutes and Van Dijk felt a twinge in his knee which meant he missed extra time, so whether they play or not remains in question, especially with the Champions League final coming in two weeks’ time.

Liverpool have won 14 of their last 16 Premier games, 11 of which came without conceding, so we go 33/20 on another win to nil.

In 10 of those wins, the Reds were leading at half-time and the final whistle, an option which can be backed at 11/10 in our Southampton v Liverpool betting tips, although they have been level at the break in three of their last four matches.

With injury doubts surrounding two of their key players and midfielder Fabinho also likely to be missing, Draw HT/Liverpool FT looks an interesting option at 16/5, as does a level opening 45 minutes at 31/20.

Liverpool also won both halves six times in their last 16 matches which is available at 11/5.

Saints, meanwhile, probably can’t wait for the season to end having taken just five points from their last 10 games, a run which has seen them drop into the bottom six.

Six of their seven defeats involved three or more match goals and another defeat that way is priced at 5/6.

Southampton v Liverpool head to head

Diogo Jota scored twice in a 4-0 victory against Saints at Anfield towards the end of November and the Portuguese is 3/1 to outscore the hosts again or 7/1 to net another double.

Liverpool have won eight of the last nine Premier League meetings with Southampton, whose only win in that spell came in this fixture last season, Danny Ings scoring the only goal of the game against his former club in the second minute.

Saints are 6/1 to repeat that victory, 4/1 to draw or 19/10 in the double chance market.

That would appear unlikely, even with Liverpool’s injury problems as their deep squad means they have plenty of options in all areas.

Liverpool won by at least two goals in seven of those eight wins and are evens to do so again or 13/4 to win by exactly that margin as they did on three occasions.

Southampton v Liverpool team news

Salah and Van Dijk are still being assessed, with manager Jurgen Klopp saying: “The process is not finished. We have a lot of decisions.”

Should Salah fail to recover then Jota is likely to come into the equation as a starter alongside Sadio Mane and Luis Diaz, although Roberto Firmino is fit again.

Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate could play in the heart of defence if Van Dijk fails a fitness test, although Joe Gomez is also an option.

Andy Robertson was struggling with cramp at the end of the Cup final and may be rested, with Tsimikas coming in at left-back.

Goalkeeper Fraser Forster and winger Stuart Armstrong are both doubtful having missed training during the week with “back problems, joint problems, knee problems”, according to manager Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Saints’ dismal performance in a 3-0 drubbing at Brentford last time out means Hasenhuttl could make changes, so Oriol Romeu and Che Adams could be restored to the starting line-up.

Goalscorer odds

Salah aside, Jota is the 7/2 favourite to break the deadlock and 6/5 to score any time, while Mane is 4/1 and 13/10 in the two markets to find the net against his former club.

Diaz has netted two goals in his last four games and is 5/1 to draw first blood or 6/4 to score, while Thiago, who scored in this season’s reverse fixture, is 18/1 and 11/2 in our Southampton v Liverpool betting tips.

Matip bagged the equaliser at Aston Villa and is 33/10 and 10/1, the same odds as Konate.

Adam and James Ward-Prowse are the 9/1 favourites from the Southampton contingent to get the ball rolling, while Stuart Armstrong is 18/1 and 11/2.
