Everton to sell two strikers to allow late transfer pounce

| 31.08.2011

Everton’s lack of disposable income has meant that they have been quiet on the transfer front all summer, although a late swoop may be possible if they sell Jermaine Beckford and Yakubu.

Much of the talks in recent weeks have been about who will leave Everton rather than who will be signed.

Phil Jagielka and Mikel Arteta have been linked with Arsenal, while rumours have also been widespread that Leighton Baines, Marouane Fellaini and Seamus Coleman could head out of the Goodison Park exit before the end of the transfer window.

However, David Moyes seems to have been successful in his efforts to repel advances for this group, but is prepared to sell some of his misfiring strikers.

Beckford has done a reasonable job since signing on a free transfer last summer, but is unlikely to score enough goals to ensure they remain leading challengers for a top-six finish in the Premier League.

He is proven at lower levels and Sven-Goran Eriksson believes that Beckford can score the goals to fire Leicester to the Premier League.

It is being speculated that Leicester have had an offer ‘in excess of £4m’ accepted for Beckford and now they have to persuade the player to agree to step down a division and out of the Premier League.

Moyes is also keen to offload Yakubu before the end of the day, although the striker appears slightly reluctant to join Blackburn.

A replacement striker has already been signed in the shape of Denis Stracqualursi, who joins on loan from Argentine club Tigres having scored over 20 league goals last season.

Therefore, any money received for Beckford could go towards signing another striker who could rival Louis Saha in scoring 20 goals in a Premier League season.
