Leaky Liverpool renew interest in Southampton’s defensive rock
Having experienced what it’s like to be a title challenger for the first time in a while, Liverpool aren’t resting on their laurels when it comes to planning new recruits for next season.
A 4-0 win over Tottenham sprung the Reds to the top of the table, leaving their odds to win a first Premier League trophy at a tantalising 15/8 with both Chelsea and Manchester City still to play.
With Champions League football a guarantee for next term, Brendan Rodgers will be acutely aware that his Liverpool squad will need plumping up if he is to build on the achievements of the current campaign.
If the transfer rumours are to be believed, the Northern Irishman has been hard at work in that regard, with links to every imaginable left winger appearing on a daily basis since the end of the January window.
Now, it seems the former Swansea man has his current employer’s leaky defence under the microscope with Southampton’s Dejan Lovren a rumoured Liverpool target come the end of the season.
The Croat was heavily linked to a Merseyside switch before landing in the south coast from Lyon last summer and has since impressed for Mauricio Pochettino in his debut campaign in England.
Part of one of the meanest defences in the division before Christmas, Lovren is being eyed up as a replacement for Kolo Toure, who’s suffered an error-prone season at his third Premier League club.
Having paid £8.5m for the 24-year-old stopper just last summer though, Southampton are unlikely to want to let their star defender move to a rival in the same division without being heavily recompensed.
That’s unlikely to dissuade Liverpool too much as their goals against tally of 39 is the highest of any of the current top six and is an area in serious need of attention.
