Man Utd v Southampton Betting Tips: Can United move into the top four?

| 13.07.2020

Manchester United can move into the Premier League top four for the first time since September with three points at home to Southampton tonight.

Shock defeats for Leicester and Chelsea over the weekend have opened the door for the Red Devils, who are now as short as 1/9 to qualify for the Champions League next season.

Can they take advantage and move up to third in the table? Or will in-form Southampton stop them in their tracks at Old Trafford?

Match Odds

United have rediscovered their swagger since the restart. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have won four on the bounce in the Premier League and are playing with a confidence reminiscent of their heyday under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Their odds tonight reflect that dominance, with our traders pricing them at 1/4 to claim an important victory.

However, their good recent form has come against out-of-form sides towards the bottom of the division, including Brighton, Bournemouth and Aston Villa. Southampton, on the other hand, are a markedly tougher opponent.

The Saints have won three from five since football resumed, including a 1-0 victory over Manchester City. They also boast the league’s joint-third best away form with 27 points taken from a possible 51.

While victory at Old Trafford may be beyond them at 10/1, they’re a much more interesting 27/10 on the Double Chance. The Draw is slightly longer at 9/2, with a 1-1 stalemate available at 9/1.

Talking Tactics

The hosts have been flying of late thanks to the performances of Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Bruno Fernandes. All four are expected to continue up-front in a formidable attacking four.

Nemanja Matic and Aaron Wan-Bissaka looked tired against Aston Villa, although both have had ample time to recover since Thursday, while Victor Lindelof should continue alongside Harry Maguire at centre-half.

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has no fresh injury concerns but does face a dilemma in midfield where Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is pushing for a recall after a substitute appearance against Everton.

He’ll likely replace Oriol Romeu, with Shane Long also set for a recall in place of Che Adams up-front.

Goalscorer Odds

Saints goalkeeper Alex McCarthy was in inspired form against Manchester City last week. He may need to produce similar heroics again at Old Trafford with United’s forwards in such good form.

Portuguese ace Fernandes has been at the centre of the hosts’ revival, and he’s 9/2 to bag a goal and assist for the third match running. As United’s regular penalty taker, he’s 11/8 to score anytime.

Greenwood has four goals in his last three matches and is 5/4 to net again here, while Martial is an 11/10 chance.

Danny Ings

The visitors will be looking towards the Premier League joint-third top goalscorer Danny Ings to poach another goal at 21/10, while James Ward-Prowse rates as a significant set-piece threat at 13/2.
