McClaren favourite as Whelan has over 50 applications for Wigan job

Steve McClaren has already failed once in his efforts to re-establish a former Premier League club to English football’s top table, but he is the favourite to get a second opportunity to achieve such a feat at Wigan.

McClaren’s tenure at Nottingham Forest has to go down as a failure after managing only 13 games in charge, while his failure to ensure England qualified for Euro 2008 will also lower his stock in the eyes of some.

However, international management is a different kettle of fish to that in club football and McClaren’s record at club level is especially good.

Although his latter months at Middlesbrough had its problems, marking his five-year stint as a whole at the Riverside would have to be deemed as a success.

Meanwhile, his first spell as FC Twente manager is remembered fondly as he guided the club to their first ever Eredivisie title in their history.

It is 7/4 that McClaren is appointed as the next Wigan manager, but chairman Dave Whelan has revealed that he will not be making any decisions until current boss Roberto Martinez moves on from the club.

This is because Wigan will be due £2m in compensation from any club that chooses to bring in the Spaniard.

Whelan has also intimated that interest in the job is rife, with as many as 50 people putting their names forward, including some with big names in the football world, although Quique Sanchez Flores has not had his name mentioned as yet.

Others that are in the betting include current Wigan assistant manager Graeme Jones at 6/1 and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at 16/1.

Although, it is Owen Coyle that still follows McClaren in the betting at 9/2.
