PSG v Real Madrid betting tips and odds

Perhaps the biggest Champions League match of the week takes place on Wednesday when Real Madrid look to overturn a 1-0 defeat from the first leg in their round-of- 16 encounter.

Kylian Mbappe struck in the fourth minute of stoppage time to give the Ligue 1 leaders a slender advantage heading to the Spanish capital and they are 7/4 for a repeat victory, with the hosts priced at 7/5.

Real Madrid v PSG form

Both teams go into the match top of their domestic tables, with Real Madrid taking advantage of Sevilla’s goalless draw at Alaves to go eight points clear thanks to a seven-game unbeaten run, five of which were victories.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side fought back from a goal down to beat Champions League hopefuls Real Sociedad 4-1 at the Bernabeu over the weekend, but PSG went down to a late goal at Nice, although their lead is still a healthy 13 points.

Of more concern to PSG coach Mauricio Pochettino is the potential absence of Mbappe who missed Saturday’s game with an ankle injury sustained in training, although he has travelled.

PSG paid the price for a couple of draws against Club Brugge and RB Leipzig in the group stage in which they finished a point behind Manchester City, who beat Pochettino’s side 2-1 at the Etihad.

Twelve wins and a draw in 13 games at home have been the key to PSG’s success this season, but they have lost three times on the road.

Real Madrid are also unbeaten at home domestically (W10 D4), though they lost to Sheriff Tiraspol in one of the all-time greatest Champions League shocks.

They won their other five games against Inter Milan, Shakhtar Donetsk and the Moldovans to finish five points clear at the top of Group D.

Los Blancos are 9/4 to qualify for the quarter-finals bearing in mind the away-goals rule is now a thing of the past.

The onus, though, is on Real Madrid to attack and we go 11/10 on both teams to score, over 2.5 goals and either team to win.

Real Madrid v PSG head to head

The first leg was settled by a brilliant finish from Mbappe who latched on to a backheel from Neymar, squeezed past two defenders and slotted the ball through the legs of goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

It was just reward for the French side who struggled to break down Madrid’s resolute defence in the first half but the introduction of Neymar in the last 20 minutes changed the course of the game.

PSG had 21 shots, eight of which were on target, and Lionel Messi had a penalty saved just after the hour mark, so they should have won the game reasonably comfortably.

Madrid, meanwhile, failed to generate a single shot on target from their three attempts, but they have never lost a home game against PSG.

Karim Benzema’s double gave Real Madrid a 2-0 lead in the group stage two seasons ago only for Mbappe and Pablo Sarabia to rescue a point with goals in the last 10 minutes.

Two years earlier, the teams met at the same round-of-16 stage when the 13-time European champions won 3-1 in the first leg and 2-1 in Paris.

Four of the last five meetings have involved three goals or more which is 4/7, while three of those matches involved goals at both ends which is 4/5.

A draw can be backed at 5/2, while it’s 3/1 on that outcome and both teams scoring.

Although PSG have a concern over Mbappe, the hosts have problems in midfield with Toni Kroos injured and Casemiro suspended, so the balance looks to have tipped in PSG’s favour if their star striker is available.

The visitors to win at the Bernabeu for the first time and concede looks an interesting prospect at 13/4 as one of our Real Madrid v PSG betting tips.

Key Battles

With Madrid missing two of their three first-choice midfielders, Pochettino will sense an opportunity to dominate the centre of the pitch, although Leandro Paredes has not played since that win in Paris and could be replaced by Idrissa Gueye, who caused Mbappe’s injury in training.

PSG defenders Marquinhos and Presnel Kimpembe, who was on the bench at the weekend, will have their hands full dealing with Benzema who has scored five goals in the Champions League this season and is the top scorer in La Liga with 20.

Messi and Mbappe both have five in this competition, but the latter will be missed the most should he fail a fitness test.

Real Madrid v PSG team news

Eduardo Camavinga and Federico Valverde could be the men to replace Kroos and Casemiro, while Marcelo and Nacho are fighting it out for the left-back spot after Ferland Mendy picked up a yellow card in Paris.

Sergio Ramos has started just two games for PSG this season and an injury means he will play no part against his former club.

Goalscorer Odds

Benzema has top billing in the first goalscorer market at 3/1 and is evens just to get on the scoresheet in our Real Madrid v PSG betting tips.

Vinicius Junior has scored just once in his last nine appearances but is 5/1 to break the deadlock or 9/5 to find the net, while Rodrygo is 9/1 and 16/5 in the two options despite being without a goal in almost five months.

Mbappe and Messi are the 4/1 co-favourites to get the ball rolling and 7/5 to score from the PSG team, while Neymar is 5/1 and 7/4.

Marquinhos has scored three times in Ligue 1 this season and can be backed at 22/1 to net the opener or 7/1 as an anytime option.
