Spanish Grand Prix Betting Tips: Hamilton the man to catch in Barcelona
Lewis Hamilton opened up an eight-point lead over Max Verstappen with victory in Portugal and now heads to Barcelona where he is 11/10 favourite to win the Spanish Grand Prix for a sixth time.
The seven-time world champion has won the last four races at the Circuit de Catalunya and will go in pursuit of his 100th pole position in Formula One this weekend, having been narrowly denied by team-mate Valtteri Bottas in Portugal.
But Verstappen has one win to his name already this season, finishing second to Hamilton twice, and will take heart from having split the two Mercedes in Spain last season to stand on the second step of the podium.
It should be an action-packed afternoon as we take a look at some of the markets in our Spanish Grand Prix betting tips.
Max at the double?
Hamilton is 6/5 joint favourite, alongside Verstappen, to clinch his century of pole positions this weekend and will want to do so at a track where overtaking is difficult.
Verstappen brings up a century of his own in his 100th race for Red Bull and is optimistic the track will suit their car. He is viewed as Hamilton’s closest challenger once again and is second favourite at 7/5, with Bottas back at 7/1 after an indifferent start to the season.
Red Bull’s Sergio Perez has shown signs of getting to grips with his new car and impressed in Spain last season in his inferior Racing Point, qualifying fourth and finishing fifth. He is 10/1 for a surprise race win.
Sainz aiming for top six
Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz is still trying to find his feet at his new team. A solid fifth at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix was followed by him slipping outside of the points in Portugal.
But the Spaniard has never finished lower than ninth at his home race, even in his early days with Toro Rosso, and is 5/6 to secure a third top-six finish in Barcelona.
Sainz’s racing hero Fernando Alonso is heading in the right direction on his return to Formula One, recording his best finish of the season – eighth – in Portugal. His Alpine team are 6/5 to claim a double points finish in Spain.
Ricciardo looks to bounce back
McLaren have made an impressive start to the season, led by Britain’s Lando Norris who has finished fourth, third and fifth in the three races of the season so far.
Portugal proved a difficult weekend for his new team-mate Daniel Ricciardo, who had to battle back to ninth having been knocked out in the first part of qualifying.
The experienced Australian will want to get back on track in Barcelona and McLaren are 6/4, alongside Ferrari, to have both cars finish in the top six.
Ricciardo is also available at 11/8 to finish ahead of Norris for the first time this season.
