ITV Racing Tips: Goshen can take the Elite Hurdle for in-form Gary Moore
There has never been a showcase like it for horse racing. The ITV racing team have virtually block-booked ITV4 for the sport on Saturday when it shows the best of the domestic action, followed later by the Breeders’ Cup, and all of it live.
It begins at home where the 2021 Flat turf season is brought to a close at Doncaster, where the feature is the November Handicap and meetings at Aintree and Wincanton provides the jumps content.
The Grand National fences will be in use for the Grand Sefton Chase while at Wincanton the highlights are provided by the Badger Beer Chase, in which the Kim Bailey-trained El Presente bids for a second victory, the Elite Hurdle, featuring Goshen, and the Rising Stars Novices’ Chase.
They will be packed into a 10-race afternoon schedule. Coverage begins at 1pm on ITV4 and we have previewed the three most significant races of the day in our ITV Racing Tips.
The last major handicap of the Flat season on turf is usually a bit of a slog as it is invariably run in soft ground and this year’s contest should be no different. So runners will need to last the mile and a half distance and possibly a bit further in order to get home. That should play to the strengths of Calling The Wind, who finished third in the Cesarewitch last time, and has won over much further. Jamie Spencer is a positive booking for this strong traveller.
The shock winner of the 2020 Stayers’ Hurdle Lisnagar Oscar makes his return here still seeking a first victory since that Festival triumph. He ran some good races without troubling the judge last season and was going well until falling when defending his crown at Cheltenham. Almost all the runners have something to prove now and on course form Summerville Boy could hold the aces. He won this prize first-time-out last season but his campaign did not go beyond January. It can only be assumed he had an issue, which he has had plenty of time to get over.
The Gary Moore stable has been in fantastic form of late with 10 winners in the last fortnight and their stable star Goshen reappears here. Last season he was the big hope to take on the Irish in the Champion Hurdle, having looked set to win the 2020 Triumph Hurdle by many lengths until coming down at the final flight. He won a lot of sympathy that day, and though he returned last season he wasn’t able to put together a consistent run of performances. He took on Honeysuckle twice but hung all the way at Cheltenham and ran only slightly better at Aintree. Where he did shine was at this track where he absolutely bolted up to win the Kingwell Hurdle by 22 lengths. This may be the time to catch him again.
