Russian Camelot & Surprise Baby lead Melbourne Cup betting

Published:

The first entries have been released for this year’s Melbourne Cup with Russian Camelot and Surprise Baby the joint favourites with our traders.

South Australian Derby winner Russian Camelot priced at 8/1 following the entry stage confirmation for the Flemington showpiece. Fellow contender Surprise Baby (8/1) will have a different jockey this spring but still heads the betting.

Craig Williams won the 2019 race on board Vow And Declare, who is 20/1 to win the Cup again this year. Adelaide Cup winner King Of Leogrance is also priced at 20/1.

At 20/1 the Andrew Balding-trained Dashing Willoughby is the shortest priced entry trained in Europe.

The Joseph O’Brien-trained Master Of Reality – who was second across the line in last year’s Cup before being demoted to fourth on protest – is among the names vying for a return in what promises to be a strong field. Fellow stablemates Twilight Payment and Buckhurst are also among the entrants.

Elsewhere, dual Melbourne Cup place getter Prince of Arran is among the other international entries for Newmarket trainer Charlie Fellowes.

Jon Lees of Ladbrokes said: “With 30 overseas entrants the Melbourne Cup remains a top target for European stables. But a flurry of acquisitions of Euro contenders for Australian interests suggests the Aussies are keen to ensure the prize stays at home again this year.”
