Tom Briscoe: Challenge Cup would be the best send-off for Sinfield

A second Ladbrokes Challenge Cup win in a row for Leeds would be the perfect way for the Rhinos to thank captain Kevin Sinfield before he departs Headingley at the end of the season.

That is according to 25-year-old winger Tom Briscoe who says that Sinfield, along with Jamie Peacock and Kylie Leuluai who will also bid farewell at the end of the campaign, deserve to go out on a high after all they have done for the club.

“To retain the cup would be massive after what Kevin’s achieved at the club. What he’s done has not been matched, he’s the most successful captain in the club’s history and he’s overseen what’s been a golden era for Leeds.

“It was great for him to finally get a win under his belt last year. There are others too who have been here for ages and they managed it too. There’s also Jamie and Kylie who’ve been great so we’d love to give them a big send off and retaining that trophy would be a great way to do that.”

Briscoe though is not banking on anything as far as reaching the final is concerned with the small matter of a wounded St Helens side standing between them and a trip to Wembley.

Saints v Leeds is perhaps the final that everyone wanted to see and after beating their rivals twice this year Briscoe is braced for a team hell-bent on revenge.

This, he says, should make for a spectacle of a game though and one that should mean thrills for both sets of fans and the neutrals.

“The league positions don’t lie. After 23 games we’re first and second and after beating them twice this season they’ll really want revenge so that will spice it up,” he added.

“Both teams are coming in on the back of a win so we’ll both be confident and that should mean the hype is worth it and hopefully we’ll put n a good show for the fans.”

It is these fans that Briscoe credits with being the motivating factor behind wanting to do well in the cup.

With Leeds fans suffering much heartbreak in Wembley finals over the years the former Hull man said last year’s win was monumental and claims that another win this year would go some way to making the national stadium a place of happy memories for the Rhinos faithful.

“It’s not about the players it’s about the support and the fans and what could be another great day out for the people of the city. It’s also brilliant for the clubs that aren’t in the final too, it’s just an incredible atmosphere around Wembley on finals day.”
