Aberdeen v Kilmarnock: Dons to get ever Euro heartache
Published:
After crashing out of the Europa League to Kazakhstan’s FC Kairat Aberdeen have little time to lick their wounds.
The Dons can now focus on building on last year’s second-place finish in the Ladbrokes Premiership to mount a serious title challenge.
Former SFA chief executive Gordon Smith told Ladbrokes last week that wins against Celtic could see Derek McInnes’ side enter the title race for real but they’ll need to beat sides like this weekend’s opponents Kilmarnock to stand a chance.
This is a fixture which the Dons have completely dominated in recent times, coming out on top in all of the last seven meetings.
The last time Killie claimed all three points was back in 2012 so all things indicate another victory for the home side here.
The last time the pair met at Pittodrie, the game finished 1-0, and with a strong defence Aberdeen to keep a clean sheet and once again win to nil looks a tempting pick at odds of 10/11.
The visitors from Ayrshire got off to the worst possible start in their opening Ladbrokes Premiership outing, suffering a humbling 4-0 reverse at the hands of Dundee in front of their own fans at Rugby Park.
The scoreline could have been a whole lot worse were it not for a string of impressive saves from debutant Jamie MacDonald. It took Killie 71 minutes to muster a first attempt on goal, and there will need to be an almighty improvement to compete in this one.
Goals have been at a premium in this fixture, with just 18 scored in the last nine matches, and another low-scoring encounter looks to be on the cards here. Both teams looked a little shot shy in the opening weekend, so the 12/5 on offer for Under 1.5 goals also appeals.
McInnes may look to shuffle his pack slightly after their exploits in midweek and this could mean exciting prospect Cammy Smith gets a chance to shine.
The 19-year-old forward has pace and skill in abundance and will be confident of exploiting a brittle Kilmarnock rear guard. He is definably backable at 21/10 to score at anytime.
