AC Milan v Liverpool preview

Liverpool started the reason in good form domestically, beating Man United 3-0 at Old Trafford in their first game, but Arne Slot comes into the game against AC Milan off the back of his first loss as Reds' boss, being beaten 1-0 at Anfield by Nottingham Forest.

AC Milan, on the other hand, failed to win any of their first three Serie A games this season, only emerging victorious in a domestic league outing for the first time this weekend, when they beat Venzia 4-0 at the San Siro.

So, Liverpool will be eager to get back to winning ways and prove that the loss to Forest was nothing more than a blip, whilst Milan will be determined to show that the win against Venezia was more of a sign of things to come rather than a fluke result.

Milan will have to be strong defensively to beat Liverpool, with the bookies deeming Slot's side to be favourites, but the Dutchman's inability to bring a defensive midfielder to the club could give the Italian side the opportunity to dominate the game.

AC Milan v Liverpool team news

Federico Chiesa joined Liverpool from Juventus this summer, and his home country could see him make his debut for the Reds as he's been included in the 23-man squad travelling to Italy for Tuesday's game.

Harvey Elliot is missing with a foot injury, so expect Dominik Szoboszlai as Liverpool's most advanced midfielder once again, with Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo both pushing to start having only been used off the bench so far this season.

Paulo Fonseca also has a relatively small injury list, with Ismael Bennacer and Malick Thiaw the only of his suspected first-team starters who aren't available for selection against the English club on September 17.

Davide Calabria is expected to return though, even if just on the bench, despite missing Milan's win over Venezia at the weekend. Alvaro Morate is in line to make his first AC Milan appearance in the Champions League following a move this summer from Atletico Madrid.

AC Milan v Liverpool betting tips & predictions

Liverpool are seen as the favourites in their game against AC Milan, and as we covered in our matchday one Champions League 2024/25 acca, we expect Slot's side to beat the Italian giants on Tuesday evening.

Slot was dealt his first blow as Liverpool boss at the weekend, and he'll be more eager than ever to right that wrong and get back to winning ways, as well many of his talented and determined squad, which includes the likes of Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk.

Speaking of Salah, we're not only expecting the Egyptian winger to start the game, but also to be his side's key man as they look to win at the San Siro, just as they did in 2021, before reaching the Champions League final later on that season.

We're pegging Salah to find the back of the net, as he did in Liverpool's first three games of the Premier League season, showing why his club as seen as one of the front-runners to win the Champions League for the sixth time come May of next year.
