Aguero and Man City to do top scorer and title double

Published:

It may not come as much of a surprise to many that the Premier League top scorer in three of the last four seasons had been plying their trade for the club that have claimed the title, with Robin van Persie’s exploits for Arsenal the one pattern breaker.

However, in the five seasons previous to that, only once had the top scorer represented the Premier League title winners, showing that a shift has taken place in recent years.

Chelsea are the favourites to win the Premier League this season at 11/5, but as it remains contentious as to who their main striker will be, it is hard to get totally behind a double involving one of their players.

One interesting proposition for the double is the 50/1 that Chelsea are crowned champions and Wayne Rooney ends the season as the top scorer, given the real possibility that he moves to Stamford Bridge.

Alternatively, with Romelu Lukaku looking the likeliest candidate to lead the Chelsea line from the strikers currently on the club’s books, the 40/1 on the Lukaku/Chelsea double coming in is worthy of some attention.

Unsurprisingly, the favourite in the Premier League betting for the double is the repeat of last season, with Manchester United topping the table and Van Persie scoring more than everyone else.

This can be backed at 8/1 and if achieved, Van Persie will emulate former Arsenal strike partner Thierry Henry in securing top scorer honours in three consecutive seasons.

Identifying Manchester City’s number one striker is not totally clear cut either, with Sergio Aguero reportedly not totally over the knee troubles that plagued him last season and Alvaro Negredo still settling into English life after moving from Sevilla.

Edin Dzeko has been their main goal-getter in pre-season and at 50/1, the Dzeko and Man City double could prove a lucrative price.

Aguero is far more likely to be Man City’s top scorer if staying fit and his 18/1 quote alongside Man City winning back the Premier League title may be the best bet of the lot in this double market.
