Aldershot vs Manchester United: Shots braced for United backlash
Published:In case you missed it, Manchester United succumbed to the worst defeat of Sir Alex Ferguson’s career against bitter rivals Manchester City on Sunday.
Unluckily for Aldershot, they are next in line to face a United side who will be much changed for this Carling Cup game.
The likes of Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra will surely be rested but, after their performances against City, that probably counts in United’s favour – it could be a long evening for the Shots…
Match odds
The most successful domestic side in English football lines up against a League Two side and unsurprisingly there looks like being only one winner.
United are 1/4 favourites to win this clash and – even taking into account the morale sapping hammering against City – they should have no trouble against a side who are currently 15th in League Two having lost five of their previous six in the league.
Despite winning the Carling Cup in three of the previous six seasons though, United have lost to lower league opposition in recent years – Southend (2006), Coventry (2007) and Derby (2009) – and if you fancy Aldershot to spring a surprise they can be backed at 11/1.
Goal Markets
Aldershot have failed to keep a clean sheet in their previous seven games and hit five in their 5-2 victory over Dagenham and Redbridge.
Meanwhile, United haven’t failed to score in any competitive game this season, so backing over 3.5 goals looks tempting at 6/5.
Finally, Michael Owen was excellent in United’s 3-0 victory over Leeds United in the last round, bagging two brilliantly taken goals.
Owen didn’t even make the subs bench against City at the weekend, so backing the well-rested striker to find the net first at 7/1 is worth considering.
