Alvarez v McGregor: Your betting preview for the big fight

Published:

Conor McGregor will be returning the Octagon for the first time since defeating Nate Diaz at the second time of asking back in August. And once again he’ll face one of the best fighters in the world in Eddie Alvarez.

The Irishman already holds the featherweight title. But this weekend he’ll look to become the first UFC two-weight champion, and odds of 8/13 say he’ll do exactly that at Madison Square Garden.

You have to go back over two years to find the last time Alvarez lost a fight and that was by unanimous decision against Donald Cerrone.

Meanwhile, McGregor’s most recent defeat came in March this year, losing by submission to Diaz, with that being the third time the 28-year-old has been defeated by that method since he turned professional in 2008.

That famous revenge fight last time out for Notorious went to a decision, and it’s 13/2 for McGregor to win by that method once again, while 10/11 says he records his 18th KO.

Despite that initial blotch against Diaz, it’s McGregor’s opponent who has more red spots next to his name (four) since he turned pro.

And acccording to our traders, Alvarez’s best chance of winning this one is by KO, TKO, Submission or TD (49/20), while 21/4 says he wins by decision. 21 per cent of his previous 28 victories have come that way.

McGregor does have a habit of getting the job done early though – with 13 of his 20 wins coming in the first round. No surprise then that it’s just 11/4 to finish this one in the first five minutes.

Alvarez has spent more time in the ring, with half of his 28 wins coming after the first round. But his last fight ended after just 3min 49sec, and 9/1 says he causes an early upset this weekend.

Only four of the pair’s combined 55 fights have been over within 60 seconds, so it’s unlikely this one will last less than a minute. But punters can get odds of 8/1 and 18/1 for McGregor or Alvarez respectively to be gone in 60 seconds.
