England vs USA – teams announced

| 12.06.2010

James Milner is the surprise inclusion for England’s Group C opener with the USA, which kicks off at 7.30pm tonight.

Milner is expected to start on the left wing, with captain Steven Gerrard partnering Frank Lampard in central midfield.

Joe Cole was widely tipped to start but he misses out to Milner, who has recovered from a virus and is 14/1 to score first.

Rob Green is the other notable selection. The West Ham goalkeeper was preferred to David James, who has been struggling with a knee injury.

The USA, meanwhile, have made no shock inclusions, though striker Robbie Findley is chosen ahead of Edson Buddle.

As expected, both sides have opted for 4-4-2 formations.

The confirmed starting line-ups are:

England: Green; Johnson, Terry, King, A Cole; Lennon, Lampard, Gerrard, Milner; Heskey, Rooney

USA: Howard; Cherundolo, Onyewu, DeMerit, Bocanegra; Donovan, Bradley, Clark, Dempsey; Findley, Altidore
