Expect around two goals when Spain meet Portugal

Published:

After a relatively disappointing tournament so far, Spain would do well to pull out the big guns against their Portuguese neighbours.

Unfortunately, anyone hoping for a thrilling feast of goals might be sorely let down. This one promises to be a rather cagey affair from two proud teams who have drawn six of their last ten meetings.

Only once since 1956 has this encounter featured more than 4 goals (odds of 4+ goals are 7/2).

So, anyone betting on the goals scored would be advised to stick to the lower ranges, with the odds of scoring 0-1 goals at 13/8, and 2-3 goals at 10/11.

But, do bear in mind, in the last ten encounters between Spain and Portugal, only twice has the scoreline featured one goal or less.

As for their recent form, Spain have played seven matches since the turn of the year, scoring 16 and conceding 4 along the way, to leave a match average of 2.8 goals per game.

Whilst in that same time, Portugal have played six, scored 13 and conceded just once, leaving a match average of 2.3 goals.

Add the fact that in their last four meetings, ten goals have been scored, at an average of 2.5 per game, and the clever bet looks to be between 2-3 goals.
