Goal threat Gerrard the ideal man to lift England

England’s World Cup preparations may have been disrupted by the withdrawal of their injured captain Rio Ferdinand, but the appointment of his successor, Steven Gerrard, should give the Three Lions hope.

A focal point of the England midfield and the heartbeat of Liverpool’s side, Gerrard is the ideal man to take the armband.

And Fabio Capello will be hoping that Gerrard can guide England in the same manner that he leads Liverpool, by setting exceptionally high standards.

Gerrard has 16 goals in 80 international appearances, and if he is allowed to roam forward in support of Wayne Rooney, then the England fans should see Gerrard at his best.

The inspirational midfielder will look to lead by example, as he and his team-mates prepare to begin their World Cup campaign against the USA on June the 12th.

This role of heightened responsibility will be familiar to Gerrard, as he wore the armband during England’s recent friendly win against Mexico.

The Liverpool man also has a royal blessing, after Prince William contacted the squad via video-link on Saturday.

Gerrard spoke to the Prince of his excitement about leading his country, and said that the team were raring to go for their World Cup opener against the USA.

A prolific scorer at club level with 80 goals for Liverpool, Gerrard will be one of England’s biggest attacking threats, and he is 7/1 to be the Three Lions’ top scorer.
