High scoring leagues point to record breaking World Cup

After high scoring domestic campaigns all over Europe, this could prove to be a record breaking World Cup in terms of goals scored.

Teams like Ajax, Chelsea, Barcelona, and Wolfsburg have all been knocking them in for fun over the last season, averaging at well over three goals per match.

With 64 World Cup games to be played, three goals per match would see a whopping 192 goals scored over the course of the tournament – which would be a World Cup record.

Hence, with a record breaking year anticipated, the market for Total Tournament Goals could make for some very interesting activity once things really get going (odds are currently at 5/6).

However, take heed. Ever since the World Cup became a 32 team competition back in 1998, there has actually been an intriguing trend for decreasing tournament totals.

1998 proved to be the highest scoring World Cup ever, with 171 goals scored. But then it started to go rather downhill. 2002 saw that total slashed by ten to end up with a tournament goal tally of 161.

And, last time around, in 2006, after a blistering start with goals flying in left, right, and centre, the scoring dried up somewhat in the latter stages of the competition.

It ended with 147 – only six more than the last 24-team World Cup in 1994.
