Klose can upstage young pretenders to be main man
Published:Miroslav Klose may have been outshone by his team-mates at the World Cup, but he could still be worth backing to be Germany’s top scorer.
Klose began the tournament as favourite to be the highest scoring German in South Africa, but his younger colleagues Mesut Ozil, Lukas Podolski and Thomas Muller are stealing his thunder.
Muller has scored three goals and he is 6/5 to be Germany’s top scorer, while Klose is hot on his trail at 5/2 with two strikes to his name.
Bayern Munich striker Klose also has the extra incentive of becoming the leading goalscorer in World Cup history. If he scores another four goals, he will overtake Ronaldo as the tournament’s all-time top scorer.
If Germany win their quarter-final against Argentina (which they are priced at 5/2 to do), they are guaranteed another two matches, where Klose will have more chances again to become a record breaker.
Argentina, meanwhile, have a goalscoring battle of their own, as Gonzalo Higuain leads the chase for the Golden Shoe with four goals, leaving his colleagues behind.
Carlos Tevez is 4/1 to leapfrog Higuain as Argentina’s top scorer, and this seems a more tempting proposition following his brace against Mexico.
Another team with an internal competition for goals is Uruguay. Their leading marksman Luis Suarez has three goals and is 1/7 to be the South Americans’ top scorer.
Suarez’s strike partner Diego Forlan, however, is only one goal behind on two, and he is a very tempting 4/1 to overtake Suarez and finish as Uruguay’s leading goalscorer.
And should Uruguay beat Ghana to reach the semi-finals, Forlan will relish the chance of boosting his scoring record in the minimum of two extra matches his side will play.
