Spain vs Switzerland – teams announced

Published:

There is no place for Fernando Torres in Spain’s starting XI to play Switzerland in the World Cup favourites’ first Group H fixture, which kicks off at 3pm.

Torres is not deemed to be match fit, so David Villa will spearhead Spain’s attack on his own. Villa is 11/4 to open the scoring.

Barcelona playmaker Andres Iniesta is included, having recovered from a thigh strain. Cesc Fabregas is on the bench.

Switzerland skipper and record goalscorer Alexander Frei is absent with injury, so Udinese midfielder Gokhan Inler will wear the captain’s armband.

The confirmed starting line-ups are:

Spain: Casillas (Captain); Ramos, Puyol, Pique, Capdevila; Busquets, Alonso, Xavi, Iniesta, Silva; Villa

Switzerland: Benaglio; Lichsteiner, Grichting, Senderos, Ziegler; Barnetta, Huggel, Inler (Captain), Fernandes; Derdiyok, Nkufo
