England vs Pakistan – Butt urges young guns to keep firing

Pakistan captain Salman Butt has admitted he is not sure how his young team will react to their drought-breaking Test win over Australia when they face England in the first of their four-match series at Trent Bridge this week.

Pakistan ended their 15-year wait for a Test win over Australia at Headingley, albeit after a nervy finish on the fourth morning.

And Waqar Younis’ young charges are now priced at 4/1 to follow their 1-1 stalemate with Australia with a series win against England.

Left-armer Aamer was the most impressive of Pakistan’s young contingent, finishing the series as equal leading wicket taker with 11, and he is 5/2 to be Pakistan’s leading wicket-taker in the series against England.

Younis’ policy to promote youth was further vindicated by Azhar Ali who hit his maiden half-century in the run chase and is 5/1 to be the top-scoring Pakistan batsman of the series.

Their contributions formed the cornerstone of a victory that prompted Butt to speak about a “new generation” for Pakistan cricket after the game.

While enthused by victory, Butt admitted he expected “tough times” ahead of the England series, especially with a inexperienced top order of Ali, Umar Amin and Umar Akmal – who can boast just 12 Test between them.

“I hope they continue to learn and that this win doesn’t get into their heads,” Butt said. “We have to work harder because we know we will make mistakes. They are pretty young, they are raw.”
