Promotion hopefuls – new-look QPR could finally fulfill potential

Published:

QPR have long been touted as favourites to win promotion to the Premier League, but with Neil Warnock at the helm, expectations could become reality at Loftus Road this season.

Warnock has won promotion with Notts County, Huddersfield and Plymouth, and he also guided his hometown club Sheffield United to the Premier League in 2006.

Having arrived at QPR in March, Warnock has delved deep into the transfer market, and his side are now a convincing 11/4 to reach the promised land of the top flight.

Of the many deals to be completed this summer, Warnock’s best signing appears to be the permanent acquisition of attacking midfielder Adel Taarabt from Tottenham.

Taarabt was outstanding when on loan at Loftus Road last season, and much will be expected of the prodigiously talented 21-year-old this term.

Elsewhere in the team, Warnock has brought in Paddy Kenny after working with the goalkeeper at Sheffield United.

Kenny was part of the promotion-winning Blades side of 2006, and his Championship know-how will be invaluable to a QPR side who are available at 10/1 to win the title this season.

Bradley Orr and Clint Hill are solid additions to the defence, while the rugged veteran Shaun Derry will provide protection for the backline in central midfield.

Forwards Leon Clarke and Jamie Mackie – both priced at 6/1 to open the scoring against Barnsley on Saturday – are also useful signings.
