Spurs draw Arsenal in the pick of Carling Cup third round

Tottenham will face North London rivals Arsenal in the Carling Cup for the third time in five seasons in what is undoubtedly the pick of the third-round clashes.

Arsene Wenger’s team have made at least the quarter-final stages of the tournament for the past seven seasons but will have their hands full at White Hart Lane, particularly if the Frenchman retains his usual approach of giving first-team experience to some of his youth players.

Arsenal are 16/1 to win the Carling Cup and will be especially keen to take revenge for their defeat to 7/1 shots Tottenham over two legs in 2008, when losing 5-1 at White Hart Lane.

Last year’s winners Manchester United have been handed a far easier task on paper away at Championship side Scunthorpe, while local adversaries Manchester City are also on the road at West Brom.

Chelsea are favourites for this year’s tournament at 4/1 and will be happy to have been drawn at Stamford Bridge to face Newcastle, with last year’s losing finalists Aston Villa hosting Blackburn also among the all Premier League ties.

Liverpool have undoubtedly been given the easiest assignment out of all of the top division’s big guns as they have landed a plum tie at Anfield against Northampton.

Roy Hodgson’s team are the most successful in the history of the competition and are 8/1 to seal an eighth success.

Owen Coyle gets a quick return to his former home as Bolton will only need to make the short trip to Burnley.

Everton are also among the more fancied teams to win the Carling Cup at 10/1, see the whole market.
