Controversy remains as Gul haul revives Pakistan series hopes

Even as Pakistan recorded an exciting 23-run win against England, the clash between the sides was again tainted by allegations of another betting scam.

Pakistan’s victory at the Oval sees them trail the one-day series 2-1, but their win was overshadowed as the International Cricket Council launched an investigation into the match betting patterns.

Haroon Lorgat, ICC chief executive, says the match featured “a certain scoring pattern” that warranted further investigation.

“We feel it is incumbent upon us to launch a full enquiry,” Lorgat said.

Following their first win of the series, Pakistan will be looking to make further inroads against England when they meet at Lord’s on Monday.

Pakistan are 7/4 to level the series at English cricket’s spiritual home, and the visitors will be hoping that adversity can galvanise their young side again.

Umar Gul tore England’s batting order to pieces with a match-winning six-wicket haul at the Oval, and the seam bowler could again be a thorn in the hosts’ side at the traditionally seamer-friendly pitch at Lord’s.

England, meanwhile, are priced at 2/5 to recover from their defeat at the Oval with a win in the fourth one-day international at Lord’s.
