Federer can make his seventh US Open final in a row
Published:Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic will resume their friendly rivalry on Arthur Ashe court in the semi-final of the US Open, but Djokovic will have to delve deep if he is to progress.
Djokovic has been in excellent form in the tournament so far, but will have to defeat one of the finest ever tennis players if he is to win his second grand slam title.
Djokovic may consider himself a little unlucky, in another generation he would be the world number one, but in Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, he has to settle for third best and he would dearly love to defeat both to win the US Open.
Despite a wobble in the first round where he came from 2-1 down to beat fellow countryman Viktor Troicki, Djokovic has impressed in straight set wins over James Blake, Mardy Fish and Gael Monfils – he is 5/2 to defeat Federer.
Roger Federer has been faultless on his path to the semi-final, destroying all who come before him comfortably, but nobody needs to tell Djokovic he’s in for a tough match, Federer holds a 10-5 head-to-head lead over the Serb.
The two have competed five times in Grand Slam tournaments, Djokovic only winning on one of those occasions on his way to the Australian Open title in 2008 and Federer is 2/7 to reach his seventh straight final.
Whilst Federer is in such great form, it’s difficult to see him overcome Djokovic with the ease he has displayed in beating previous opponents and he is 5/2 to win 3-1 or 11/2 to win 3-2.
The obvious choice would be Federer to meet Rafael Nadal in the final and it’s hard to see any other scenarios from occurring. See the full US Open tennis betting market here.
