Out of contract Lee Hendrie links up with Reading for trial

Lee Hendrie is a free agent following his departure from Derby this summer and Reading will offer him a chance at a contract, following a successful trial.

Hendrie had been linked with Aberdeen, Queens Park Rangers and Brighton and Hove Albion but it seems Reading have won the race to sign him as they challenge for the Championship, which they are 16/1 to win.

The Royals are on the lookout for a goal scoring midfielder after Gylfi Sigurdsson left for Hoffenheim, and manager Brian McDermott believes Hendrie can fill the void.

“Hendrie’s best position is just off the striker. He’s scored a lot of goals in his younger days for Aston Villa there,” said McDermott.

“I’m a great believer in giving people opportunities and, having spoken to him a couple of times, I know how hungry he is. So we’ll see how things go.”

McDermott also added that Hendrie received a glowing reference from fellow Reading players Brian Howard, Andy Griffin and Ian Harte, all of whom have known Hendrie well from his time within the game.

Reading currently sit 13th in the Championship with four points from five games but will hope new signings Zurab Kizanishvill iand Ian Harte can boost the squads performance when the Championship returns from the international break.

The Championship takes a break this weekend as England host Bulgaria. See the latest International football betting markets here.
