Speed keen to take advantage of emergency loan window

Although the transfer window has closed until January, there is a strong possibility that Sheffield United could see some new additions join their ranks in the coming weeks.

New boss Gary Speed is keen to add to his squad during the emergency loan window as he looks to build on the recent victory over Preston, which was the first for Sheffield United in the Championship this season.

Speaking to the Sheffield Star, chief executive Trevor Birch indicated that the Blades were particularly keen to increase their options in midfield.

He said: “Out wide is where Gary predominately is looking. We’ll be assisting him all we can and he’s made it plain that he’s got one or two people in mind.”

A number of names have been linked with a loan deal at Bramall Lane, including a return for former defender Kyle Naughton from Tottenham.

Meanwhile, Everton striker James Vaughan has also had his name mentioned, alongside Peter Halmosi of Hull.

However, Speed is eager to keep all of the players currently at his disposal because of the lack of numbers in the squad he inherited from former manager Kevin Blackwell.

Sheffield United are 28/1 to win the Championship this season despite their slow start, while they are 2/1 to continue their recovery with another three points away at Derby in their next fixture.

Speed would be ecstatic if his team can repeat their performance of last season at Pride Park, when a goal ten minutes from time by Matt Kilgallon handed them a 1-0 victory.

It is 7/1 for this scoreline to be repeated, although Derby have scored in their last three games in all competitions.

QPR currently lead the way in the Championship on goal difference from Cardiff and Ipswich and are the 4/1 favourites to take the title this season. See the complete market.
