Wawrinka yet to drop a set as he gears up for Murray clash
Published:Andy Murray will call on memories of two of the best wins of his career when he takes on Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka in the third round of the US Open on Sunday.
Murray has a 5-3 career record against Wawrinka, including a memorable five-set victory at Wimbledon last year in the first full match to be played under the Centre Court roof and is 1/10 to defeat Wawrinka.
But it will perhaps be the way he played in their meeting in New York in 2008 which Murray will focus on, the Scot winning 6-1 6-3 6-3 on his way to the final.
“I did everything well to beat him that night, I played very well to beat the guy,” Murray recalled, “I think at the time he was ranked in the top 20 in the world and had been playing good tennis.
“He does everything well, he serves well, he’s got a solid return and he can play good doubles, so he can volley well.
“He’s a very, very difficult player. I had a match with him at Wimbledon that was one of the best atmospheres I played in.”
The Wimbledon match Murray speaks of was the last time these two met when Warwinka ran Murray all the way – Murray took the fifth set 6-3 and is 8/1 to win in five sets this time.
Wawrinka has matched Murray so far in not dropping a set in his opening two matches and has promised to take an attacking approach against the British number one.
Both players are playing some of their best tennis, which will be a worry to Wawrinka as Murray’s best tennis surpasses the Swiss player’s best.
