Bothroyd a serious contender to top Championship scoring charts

| 26.10.2010

Jay Bothroyd looks even more like the leading candidate to finish as the Championship’s top scorer this season following a fine double in Cardiff’s imposing win over Leeds.

Cardiff’s attacking starlets played with pace and power at Elland Road and with Bothroyd chosen to lead the line, it is inevitable that he is going to get his fair share of chances.

Whether he is prolific enough to take them is a different matter, but based on the start he has made to the season, it seems as though he has the composure to fire Cardiff towards the Premier League.

Bothroyd has featured in 11 of Cardiff’s 13 Championship games so far and has found the target on nine occasions, which puts him one clear at the top of the scoring charts from Burnley’s Chris Iwelumo.

He is the 5/1 favourite to finish as the Championship’s top scorer this season and there is every reason to believe that the goals will continue to come.

Not only is he relatively quick and good in the air, he also has an accurate left foot that will provide more than a handful of goals.

Furthermore, he is blessed with better players around him than many other leading top-scorer contenders.

Craig Bellamy, Jason Koumas, Peter Whittingham and Kris Burke all have the ability to put dangerous balls into the box or provide the killer passes to unlock defences.

Bothroyd’s understanding with Bellamy has looked especially dangerous early on in the season, with the duo combining smart flicks and runs to unlock defences.

This partnership could help Cardiff gain promotion to the Premier League after so many near misses in recent years and they are currently 15/8 to win the Championship.

Cardiff and QPR are six points clear at the top of the Championship at present, with QPR 7/4 to win the title. See the full Championship winners betting odds market.
