Ferguson wins the battle as Rooney decides to sign new contract

Wayne Rooney has signed a new five-year contract with Manchester United just two days after expressing his desire to leave the club.

The deal will keep the Manchester United striker at the club until June 2015 and will break the hearts of Manchester City fans who were the favourites to sign the forward.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Sir Alex Ferguson revealed the striker was looking to leave the club but insisted the door was still open for Rooney to sign a new contract.

But Rooney has today said, “I’ve talked to the manager and the owners and they’ve convinced me this is where I belong.”

Rooney will have a job to do to win back the support of the Man Utd fans and team-mates after some unsavoury behaviour over the past few days.

The best way for the England forward to do that is to start finding the net, whilst spearheading Manchester United’s charge to win back the Premier League title – they are 5/1 to win the Premier League.

Rooney has become the best paid player at the club following the saga, and many will question his actions over the past few days as it seems Rooney has been seeking a bigger pay day.

“I’m sure the fans over the last week have felt let down by what they’ve read and seen,” said Rooney.

“The fans have been brilliant with me since I arrived and it’s up to me through my performances to win them over again.”

Ferguson is obviously delighted with the news his prize asset is staying and said, “I think Wayne now understands what a great club Manchester United is.”

Man Utd are 4/6 to win at Stoke on Saturday and the news will only lift the club as they search for their first away win.

Rooney is now 16/1 to be the Premier League’s top scorer. See the full Barclays Premier League football betting odds market here.
