Fisher can emulate team-mate Kaymer in Vilamoura this week
Published:Ross Fisher is looking forward to a trip to the sunny climate of southern Portugal this week after spending the past two weeks in tough conditions in Scotland and Wales.
Whilst the weather could not dampen the Englishman’s Ryder Cup celebrations, Fisher has admitted it would be nice to see some sun as he heads the European Tour betting for the Portugal Masters event this week.
“I’ve had enough rain in the last week and a half to last me a lifetime so a bit of sunshine will be very nice,” said Fisher.
“It’s a place [Oceanico Victoria golf course] where I usually seem to do well so hopefully that’s the case next week.”
The Englishman failed to make the cut in this event last year but finished third in 2008, and 7T in 2007, leaving Fisher the 12/1 favourite ahead of Ryder Cup team mate Miguel Angel Jimenez, who is 16/1 to win the Portugal Masters.
Alavaro Quiros, also 16/1 to win, won the tournament in 2008 and is looking to add to his Open de Espana win earlier in the year.
Charl Schwartzel, the South African who had a blinding start to the season with five top-ten finishes and two wins in his first eight tournaments, is returning to the course fresh from a four-week break and is 16/1 to win in Portugal.
Schwartzel has two top-ten finishes on the three occasions this tournament has been played and can rediscover that early season form.
17-year-old Italian Matteo Manassero sampled the atmosphere at the Ryder Cup and has been inspired by the Molinari brothers recently.
His 22nd place finish at the Alfred Dunhill Links was impressive and the young Italian can take confidence from his third place finish at the European Masters – he is 40/1 to win the Portugal Masters.
