Favourites set to dominate Dubai World Championship
Published:Last year’s Dubai World Championship was won by future world No.1 Lee Westwood by a more than comfortable six strokes. But the rest of the top ten also read likes a who’s who of the European tour’s top golfing talent.
Rory McIlroy finished in third spot and is 12/1 to win it this time around, while the rest of the top ten included four European Ryder Cup players and 2006 US Open winner Geoff Ogilvy.
The Earth Course at the Jumeirah Golf Estates is a course on which low scores can be posted – as we saw with Westwood’s winning score of 23 under par last year – so it’s the form players who are worth keeping an eye on even more so than usual.
Ian Poulter – who finished tied ninth last year – cruised to victory in the UBS Hong Kong Open last weekend with a 22 under par aggregate and could certainly be worth backing at 14/1.
If you do fancy some longer odds though, you could do a lot worse than taking a look at the hugely impressive Matteo Manassero.
The 17-year-old Italian has made history this season by becoming the youngest ever winner on the European Tour with his victory in the Castelló Masters Costa Azahar last month. He’s since backed that up with a second place finish at the Hong Kong Open last weekend, posting 65s in each of his last three rounds.
Backing the Italian at 40/1 could be one to consider for the more adventurous of you.
Elsewhere, Luke Donald hasn’t won a tour event for four years but is still eighth in the world rankings thanks to his incredible consistency. He’s finished second on the PGA Tour three times this season and could be worth backing for a top five finish at 3/1.
