Federer returns home as Swiss Indoors assembles strong field

Published:

Federer promptly won the IF Stockholm open after announcing that he was targeting a strong finish to the end of the season, and he is the 11/10 favourite to win in Switzerland this week.

A strong finish in Federer’s eyes equals a win in his final three tournaments and, having already managed to capture one title, Federer is on course to meet his end of year demands.

In a field that contains four of the world’s top ten, it’s not a foregone conclusion that Federer will win this week, and Novak Djokovic is his main threat to him winning on home soil.

Djokovic is the second seed this week and is 11/4 to win the Davidoff Swiss Indoors, but has arguably the hardest draw.

Djokovic faces Ernst Gulbis in the first round and is 1/8 to beat Gulbis despite losing to Gulbis on the last occasion that the two met.

If Djokovic negotiates a tough first round tie, he is likely to face John Isner and Tomas Berdych or Ivan Ljubicic en route to the final, whereas Federer’s main danger in the top half of the draw is Andy Roddick.

Considering Roddick’s poor form on the hard courts, the American is 16/1 to win in the ATP Tour betting market, Federer should cruise to the final with Marian Cillic a potential semi-final opponent.

With Berdych also out of sorts and facing a potentially explosive second round match with Richard Gasquet, Djokovic could find himself facing in-form Ljubicic in the semi-finals.

The Croat will be confident of making his second final in as many weeks.

Ljubicic lost last week’s final to Gael Monfils in Montpellier and is a 22/1 shot to win the Davidoff Swiss Indoors.

A each way bet on Ljubicic would offer 11/1 for Ljubicic to make the final. See the full Davidoff Swiss Indoors betting odds here.
