Premier League title hopes all but definitely over at Liverpool

Published:

It was only a month ago that Liverpool were on the verge of becoming involved in the Premier League title race, but two defeats in three games has all but ended their challenge for good in November.

Liverpool’s betting odds have drifted to 66/1 to win the Premier League after losing away to Tottenham and this has left them 12 points adrift of leaders Manchester United.

Even worse news for boss Roy Hodgson is that Jamie Carragher had to be replaced late on against Spurs with a dislocated shoulder, which further heightens the club’s current injury troubles.

Carragher and Daniel Agger will both be missing in defence for a few weeks, while Steven Gerrard is still sidelined by a hamstring problem.

This means that there is a shortage of experienced cover for Martin Skrtel and Sotirios Kyrgiakos at the heart of the defence and an injury to either of these in their next game at home to Aston Villa could lead to Liverpool being more relegation candidates than title contenders.

Hodgson has described Carragher and Gerrard as the “lifeblood of the club” and their added passion could have been a major asset in the run-up to the hectic Christmas calendar.

The injuries will leave Liverpool short on players with a deep knowledge of the club and an understanding of what is expected of them by the fans.

Liverpool have a host of winnable games coming up and a failure to pick up victories could not only push them closer to the relegation places, but also spell the end of an eventful tenure for Hodgson.

They are currently just five points clear of the relegation zone and could be a big price at 40/1 to be playing Championship football next season.
