Soderling enters world’s top four as Murray gets demoted to fifth
Published:Andy Murray will have woken up this morning as the world’s fifth best player after Robin Soderling leapfrogged the Brit in the world rankings by winning in Paris on Sunday.
Against the partisan crowd of 14,000 supporting local favourite Gael Monfils, Soderling was mightily impressive and his victory confirms his status as the dark horse of the ATP World Tour finals.
Murray is currently 9/2 in the ATP World Tour Finals betting market but considering he’s just lost his world ranking to Soderling, it seems very short considering Soderling is as big as 8/1.
World number four is an all time high for Soderling and the Swede will enter the ATP finals high in confidence after his Paris victory.
The full line-up for the final event of the ATP season was confirmed in Paris last week and Soderling will be joined by Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Murray, Tomas Berdych, David Ferrer and Andy Roddick.
Having beaten fellow final contenders Murray, Roddick, Ferrer, Berdych and Federer this season, there nothing to suggest Soderling can’t upset the odds and emerge from London victorious.
But Federer is in fine form ahead of the finals and after stating that he was targeting a strong finish to the season just over three weeks ago, Federer has since lost just once in his last 12 matches.
Federer is the 5/2 favourite to win in London, ahead of Nadal in the betting market because of the shoulder injury that’s troubling the Spaniard.
Nadal is 3/1 to win the ATP finals but considering his injury and the timing of the event, Nadal would rather rest and prepare for the Australian Open in January than exert himself and cause further injury in London.
