England haven’t won a second Test in Australia since Sydney 1971

England may have all the confidence heading into the second Test in Adelaide, but history suggests Australia have the edge when it comes to the second Test, and test matches in Adelaide.

Ricky Ponting’s side are 9/4 to win the second Test and put the disappointment of allowing England back into the match with a terrible bowling performance in the first Test.

Adelaide isn’t always the stage for the second Test but has been for the past two Ashes series in which Australia have posted a first innings total of more than 500.

And Ponting’s men will be desperately seeking a win as they look to win back the confidence of the Australian public.

But England, also 9/4 to win the second Test, are high in spirits after securing the draw in the first Test, and considering the weakness of the Australian attack, this is their best chance to end the second Test hoodoo that currently surrounds them.

Over the last five Test matches at the Adelaide Oval, the wicket has seen 6067 runs scored and four declarations over 19 innings, suggesting a draw, the favourite result in the Ashes betting at 11/10, is the most likely.

But the ground staff have promised to set-up the pitch for a positive result and England are 5/6 to be leading at the end of the first innings.

Graeme Swann and Xavier Doherty will be looking forward to bowling on a pitch that has seen spinners take 33 of the last 104 wickets, and both players are 4/1 and 10/1 to take the most wickets in the first Test.

But the bet of the first innings looks to be Alistair Cook at 4/1 to be the top England batsman in the first innings.

A £10 stake on England winning the second Test would return £32.50. New customers can sign up here for a free £10 bet.
