Cup win means little for West Ham’s survival hopes

| 22.02.2011

It could be argued that West Ham will gain a massive confidence boost by their 5-1 mauling of Burnley in the FA Cup, but this does not automatically mean they will transfer this form into their Premier League survival bid.

Earlier in the season West Ham dismantled Manchester United 4-0 in the Carling Cup and many people believed that this would be the start of their climb up the Premier League.

However, this never materialised and they ended up losing the two Premier League games that followed the Manchester United victory.

Almost three months have gone by since and West Ham are still in the relegation places, three points from safety.

West Ham’s betting odds are 4/7 to finish in the bottom three and they have two home games next that they may need to win if they want to avoid the drop.

First up is the trip of Liverpool to Upton Park and West Ham are 11/5 to take three points.

However, the omens do not look good for West Ham as they have lost five of their last six games against Liverpool and have also failed to find the target in five of these six fixtures.

Furthermore, Liverpool are unbeaten in their last seven games in all competitions and have won four of their last five in the Premier League.

Liverpool’s betting odds are 1/1 to beat West Ham, with the draw that would help the aspirations of neither team priced at 11/5.

West Ham play Stoke at home after Liverpool and know realistically that their form at Upton Park over the remainder of the season will have a major say on where they will be plying their trade in the next campaign.

A £25 stake on West Ham beating Liverpool 2-1 would return £250. New customers can sign up here for a free £25 bet.
