Sporting Lisbon vs Rangers – Away goal will be crucial for Scots

Published:

Sporting Lisbon’s last-minute equaliser at Ibrox last week has left this Europa League tie wide open between two sides who both have their weaknesses.

Rangers have scored just one goal away from home in Europe this season, but Sporting have won just three of their ten home games in the Portuguese Liga this season and were knocked out by Rangers on their way to the 07/08 UEFA Cup final.

Match Odds

Rangers may have won 2-0 on the last and only occasion they’ve visited the Estadio Jose Alvalade, but the Europa League betting makes them the underdogs to progress and Walter Smith’s side are 7/1 to beat Sporting.

Sporting are 8/13 to beat Rangers and with the away goal advantage from the first leg, they are in the stronger position to qualify.

A draw, priced at 5/2, would be good enough for Sporting to progress should the game finish goalless, but should Rangers double their European goal tally this season then Sporting would need to win to progress.

Total Goals

The 0-0 draw is a very tempting bet at 8/1 considering Rangers poor form in front of goal, but Sporting have scored 13 from their last six home games and backing the Portuguese side to win 2-0 offers shorter odds at 6/1, but looks the better bet.

A 1-1 draw would see the tie head into extra time and is the favoured result in the betting at 11/2, and the game promises to be a low-scoring tie with just four goals scored in three games between the two.

Former Spurs striker Hedler Postiga has scored three times in his last three games and is Sporting’s leading scorer in Europe, and at 9/2 to score the first goal offers punters plenty of value in the Europa League betting.

A £25 stake on Postiga scoring first and Sporting winning 2-0 would return £575. New customers can sign up here for a free bet worth £25.
