Kuyt to sign new Liverpool deal, Prieto becomes leading target

Dirk Kuyt has been impressed with Liverpool’s renewed ambition and is close to signing a new deal to ensure he is an integral part of their quest for trophies.

The January signings of Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll has heightened expectation at Liverpool and more signings are predicted for the summer, with a winger seemingly the chief target.

This ambition has suitably impressed Kuyt to the point that he is keen to sign a 12-month extension to his current deal, which expires in 2013.

Kuyt said: “Liverpool is a club that should be playing for trophies and I guarantee that will happen soon.

“With Luis and Andy arriving, we have become a stronger and I have a strong suspicion that the club will reinforce again in the summer. I absolutely love it here.”

Kuyt has already shown his love for the club by turning down a move to last season’s Champions League winners Inter Milan at the start of the campaign and is optimistic that he will be rewarded for his decision.

Liverpool are virtually assured of finishing in the top six this season and a summer of spending should strengthen their challenge for the Premier League title in the next campaign.

Lille pair Eden Hazard and Gervinho have been among the names linked with a move to Anfield, while Rennes’ Sylvain Marveaux has reportedly already agreed a move.

The latest name to be touted as a possible Liverpool signing is Xabi Prieto, who has enjoyed a good season at Real Sociedad.

However, although he can play in a wide position, Prieto may be most effective in an advanced central role, similar to that employed by Mesut Ozil at Real Madrid.

Meanwhile, he has also proved prolific dead ball taker, which could enhance the number of goals Liverpool score from set pieces.
