Ladbrokes best price for What A Friend in Grand National odds
Published:Punters looking to get behind What A Friend will find no better price than 14/1 in the Grand National odds anywhere on the market.
The horse, owned by legendary football manager Sir Alex Ferguson and trained by five-time champion trainer Paul Nicholls, is due to race at Aintree racecourse at 4.15pm.
The Ladbrokes odds compilers decided to go against What A Friend when setting the Grand National odds and are guaranteeing the best price on the eight-year-old despite the Racing Post considering it the second highest-scoring horse in its ratings system behind 16/1 contender Silver By Nature.
It is also worth remembering that What A Friend finished an excellent fourth behind recent Cheltenham Gold Cup champions Long Run, Denman and Kauto Star in the 2011 instalment of National Hunt’s blue riband event, which caught the eye of one of Britain’s senior handicappers, Phil Smith.
After the encouraging run at Cheltenham, Smith, who is required to compile the weights that are so crucial in determining the Grand National odds as early as February and cannot change them after subsequent performances, told the Guardian:
“It will be a huge temptation for them to run What A Friend in the Grand National now. I’ve raised him to a mark of 171 after his Gold Cup run, but he can run off 156 in the Grand National.”
As a result. What A Friend will be carrying 15lb less compared to the other runners than he would have done if the ratings could take into account the horse’s most recent run, which is as good a reason as any to back a horse in the Grand National.
