Schwartzel 50/1 to win the Open but Woods’ roar gets loader

Ladbrokes were saved a six-figure payout on Sunday when the Tiger Woods comback stopped just short of a win, but the traders were significantly frightened to cut Woods into 6/1 favouritism for the Open.

Charl Schwartzel was the toast of Augusta last night after the greatest finish to a Masters the world has seen for a long time in which the favouritism changed hands on numerous occasions during the in-play Masters betting.

Having started the day four shots ahead, Rory McIlroy wilted under the pressure as Tiger Woods and Geoff Ogilvy produced incredible rounds of 65 to throw themselves back into contention.

As Tiger continued to find birdie after birdie the punters continued to pile in on the four-time Masters champion, but it wasn’t to be as Jason Day, Adam Scott and Schwartzel finished strongly to leave Tiger in a tie for fourth with Geoff Ogilvy and Luke Donald.

Having birdied the 17th, Charl Schwartzel was stood on the 18th tee knowing a par would be enough to hand him victory as Day and Scott stood in the clubhouse praying the South African would drop a shot.

But having holed the 15ft birdie putt to make it four birdies in the final four holes, Schwartzel finished two shots clear of the field to win his maiden Major title.

The South African also moves up to 11 in the world rankings and gets a quote of 50/1 to win the Open, and as a six-time winner on the European Tour and with 14 tournaments between now and the Open, Schwartzel is looking a big price.

The US Open is the next Major tournament and starts on June 13 at the Congressional Country Club in Maryland, and after a thrilling finish to the Masters yesterday we can’t wait.

A £20 stake on Schwartzel winning the Open would return £1,020. New customers can sign up here to claim a £30 free bet.
