All eyes to be on Overdose on British debut at Haydock
Published:Hungary is not a country that has a big impact on horse racing all that often, but the hype is certainly strong surrounding the British debut of Overdose in the Temple Stakes at Haydock this weekend.
Overdose is the 9/4 favourite in the Haydock odds to win the Temple Stakes and this is with good reason, as his racing record in Europe stands at 15 wins from 16 starts.
This impressive streak has earned the Hungarian sprinter the nickname of the ‘Budapest Bullet’ and he displayed all of his speed to claim an easy victory in a 5f contest at Hoppegarten, Germany, on his only start this season.
Not only did he win comfortably, but he also broke the 5f track record at the course and connections are confident that the horse will run well in the Group Two contest at Haydock.
Miklos Katona, a spokesman for owner Zoltan Mikoczy, said: “He came out of his run in Germany well. Everything is OK with him.
“Earlier in his career, he raced mostly on faster ground and has also shown that he acts on softer ground, so whatever the going is at Haydock, it should be no problem for him.”
Overdose will be based in Amanda Perrett’s yard and a strong run at Haydock will only enhance his credentials further ahead of a probable run at Royal Ascot next month, where he is expected to compete in the King’s Stand Stakes.
However, he will not have it easy at Haydock as there are some strong rivals in the field, most notably last year’s Betfred Sprint Cup winner Markab and Palace House Stakes victor Tangerine Trees.
Markab is 10/1 in the Temple Stakes betting with Tangerine Trees 9/1, as Kingsgate Native is considered Overdose’s chief rival at 5/1.
