Donald bidding to become first player to land Match Play double
Published:Luke Donald will be hoping to continue his remarkable run of form when the European Tour heads Andalucia this week for the Volvo World Match Play Championship.
Having won the WGC-Accenture Match Play in Arizona earlier this year, Donald has to be high up on the list for every punter but it’s the fact he is yet to finish outside the top ten in any of his eight starts this season that makes him such an attractive bet.
Donald is 6/1 to win when 24 of the world’s best golfers go head-to-head this week, and only world number one Lee Westwood heads him in the World Match Play betting at 5/1.
Westwood’s match play record is abysmal, a first round exit in Arizona in February can testify, and the favourite is one to avoid this week.
Donald will have to become the first play to have ever won both the WGC-Accenture Match Play and the World Match Play in the same season and it’s worth taking on Donald.
The 24 entrants have been split into eight groups of three for the round robin stage in which the winners advance to the quarter-finals.
Ross Fisher and Ryan Moore stand in the way of Donald and Fisher – a 25/1 shot to win the tournament – is a previous Match Play champion and looks plenty of value at 9/4 to top his group.
Rory McIlroy is 1/1 to win his group which includes Retief Goosen and Nicolas Colsaerts while Ian Pouler is 5/4 to top a group that includes Francesco Molinari and Paul Lawrie.
Paul Casey looks a solid value bet to win this week at 16/1, but he must negotiate his way past Alvaro Quiros and Soren Kjeldsen in his group and is 11/8 to do so.
