Lineker: Barcelona only need to turn up to win Champions League

Gary Lineker believes that Manchester United need to rely on getting lucky or Barcelona having an off day if they are to win the Champions League final.

Manchester United are 11/4 in the Champions League odds to beat Barcelona in the 90 minutes and Lineker admits that Sir Alex Ferguson’s team benefit to some degree from home advantage with the final being played at Wembley.

However, this is unlikely to be enough to prevent Barcelona winning the Champions League for the third time in six seasons.

Lineker said: “If Barcelona turn up, they win. Barca have got to have a bad day for United to realistically have a chance.

“If they played ten times, United might win one or two of them, there would maybe be a couple of draws and Barca would win the rest.”

The former England striker also believes that a Barcelona victory at Wembley would take them one step closer to confirming their position as perhaps the best club side in history.

Barcelona’s odds are 1/1 to win the Champions League final inside 90 minutes, which includes a repeat of the 2-0 victory they claimed against Manchester United at the same stage of the competition in 2009.

This triumph could be significant as Barcelona’s team is arguably just as strong two years on, most notably in attack with David Villa and Pedro replacing Samuel Eto’o and Thierry Henry.

Meanwhile, Manchester United will have to try to get revenge without Cristiano Ronaldo, who was arguably the star of their team in 2009.

They have added Antonio Valencia and Javier Hernandez to their squad in the intervening period, but it remains to be seen if they can be central to a change in result.
