Paris prepares for Del Potro as Argentine recovers from injury

Juan Martin del Potro has recovered from the hip injury that has ruled him out for the past fortnight and will take his place in the French Open draw on Friday.

Del Potro has struggled with injury since winning the 2009 US Open, but the Argentine has looked back to his best this season and there will be plenty of del Potro fans who are hoping this latest setback was just a blip.

The big-serving Argentine is 25/1 to win the French Open which starts on Monday, and having reached the semi-final of the French Open on his last appearance beck in 2009, del Potro has the pedigree to mount a challenge.

This season has seen del Potro feature in clay court tournaments twice, lifting the trophy in Serbia before retiring against Rafael Nadal in Madrid and if he has fully recovered from his injury, the 22-year-old has to be respected.

Because of his lengthy absence del Potro has slipped to 27 in the world rankings and so punters backing the Argentine at Roland Garros will be hopeful of a decent draw when it’s made on Friday.

Should del Potro avoid the top seeds in the early rounds, the further the Argentine goes in the tournament, the more his confidence will grow and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him beat the likes of Roger Federer or Andy Murray at the quarter-final stage.

Murray did have the same French Open odds as del Potro until his semi-final appearance against Novak Djokovic last week, and the Scot has been backed into 16/1 to win the French Open.

Murray has never won a clay court title and his best finish in a French Open is a quarter-final appearance.
